At MissionEB, we believe that every volunteer has a story worth sharing, one that can inspire others to get involved and make a difference in their communities. This week, we’re excited to highlight Ellis Fitzwalter, a dedicated volunteer and co-founder of H.E.A.L.: STOP HEROIN, INC., who has turned personal tragedy into a powerful mission to help others.
Can you introduce yourself and share how you first became involved in volunteering?
My wife, Patti, and I created H.E.A.L.: STOP HEROIN in 2018 as a grassroots nonprofit. Our journey into volunteering began after the tragic loss of our son to an accidental heroin overdose in 2014. This event transformed our lives and inspired us to share our story with the community, to educate and raise awareness about the dangers of opiates and other harmful drugs, both legal and illegal.
What inspired you to start volunteering, and what exactly did you work on?
The inspiration behind our work comes from the pain of our son's passing. Since then, it has been our mission to spread awareness and educate others. We focus on prevention, early intervention, and harm reduction, hoping to empower others with the knowledge we've gained throughout our journey.
Could you describe a memorable volunteering experience that had a significant impact on you?
Before founding H.E.A.L., we volunteered for an organization called Walking for Wellness: STOP HEROIN, where we organized a walk in Ferguson, MO. The outpouring of support was overwhelming and filled with emotion. It was a powerful moment that reinforced our commitment to the cause.
How do you balance your professional life with your volunteer commitments?
Since I’m retired, I have the flexibility to devote as much time as needed to our mission, which allows me to fully commit to volunteering and helping others.
In your opinion, what role does volunteering play in building stronger communities?
Volunteering in your community gives you a strong sense of ownership. Everyone must play a part to make a community thrive. It’s through volunteer work that people can come together, support each other, and create a positive impact.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering volunteering but hasn’t yet started?
Don’t wait. Find a cause you are passionate about and jump in. The difference you make will not only impact others, but it will also enrich your own life.
How do you think volunteering contributes to personal development and growth?
It fills you with satisfaction knowing you are part of the solution for your community. Being involved allows you to grow personally, as you realize the strength of your impact and how your efforts can help those in need.
Ellis Fitzwalter’s story is a reminder of how deeply personal experiences can drive meaningful change. His dedication to helping others through H.E.A.L.: STOP HEROIN, INC. exemplifies the power of community and the importance of giving back. We are grateful for volunteers like Ellis who continue to make a difference, one step at a time.
